Jabber's Extensible Presence

The other day when I was waxing lyrically about the future of Jabber and why I think it's going to succeed despite the fact its such a niche service right now, I forgot to mention presence as one of the primary reasons for this (as someone named Ryan reminded me about in the comments - thanks).

It just so happens that Jabber.com's Joe Hildebrand just published a neat PDF which examines the different uses for XMPP (Jabber's open IM protocol)'s presence which is worth a look. From the Jabber Architecture Blog:

The Present Value of Presence

I finally finished the whitepaper that I've been working on for a while. It is called The Present Value of Presence: Leveraging Your Instant Messaging Investment (available free from the Jabber, Inc. website). The abstract:

  • 10 attributes of XMPP presence
  • Presence applications
  • Presence case studies

Since we often run into potential customers and partners that don't understand what we mean when we talk about presence, we thought it would be a good idea to lay out the foundations of presence, what it means to us, and what it can mean to people who use XMPP

It's a really nice, concise summary of presence and the idea that it's not just for IM. It's a good document to go over to get a good global view of presence for both the people who sorta "know" presence and to hand off to someone who may not be totally clear on the idea.
