What's the Plan Russ?
So if you didn't get the hint from last night, today was my last day at work. I'm so glad to have finally made the decision to move on because I was Not Happy. The only reason I lasted this long was because the money was so much better than what I was making before. But yesterday I realized that the situation wasn't going to get better and it wasn't worth the money, so I decided to get out of there and get life under my control again.
The plan now is to go back into independant consulting, focusing on Mobile technologies, especially Symbian, J2ME and server-side mobile stuff like WAP/MMS/etc. The project I'm working on now is going to be a "live resume" which should show off my technical abilities (and may generate some cash-flow but I'm not planning on that for now) and this blog as well as Mobitopia will hopefully help get contacts and leads. (This has actually already happened).
Another plan is that we want to move back to the U.S. this year - back to California. We're going to start Ana's paperwork after our 2 year anniversary in May (Alex has his passport already) and I'm going to start looking for contract opportunities back home and places to live. I'm not really too picky about where in Cali just yet, but I'd like to get back to the Bay Area eventually. On the short list of places is the San Francisco area, San Diego, Santa Cruz and yes, even L.A. since my brother lives there and it'd be nice to have family close by. Hopefully by the end of the year, we'll see.
The best thing is that I'm going to the Symbian conference next week so I can see if I can make contacts there and then afterwards I'll be free to work on my stuff for a while until work becomes steady. The logistics of this at first are a bit sucky because Alex doesn't go off to his nursury until June, so I've got to find somewhere to work during the day for the next month while Ana's Mom takes care of him because I can't work and take care for Alex at the same time (I've tried). So I'm going to try to find a library or somewhere where I can hole up in a corner. Or maybe I'll take a semi-permanent seat at Starbucks down the road.
Anyways, lots of changes, but that's always fun.
